What can AI companion regulation learn from social media governance? Drawing on a paper presented at FAccT 2026, this session explores responses to harmful content and addictive design, including content moderation, age restrictions and platform accountability. We\u2019ll consider what technical safeguards and legal rules can achieve\u2014and where broader questions about relationships, responsibility and social power call for different approaches.<\/p>\n

About the speaker<\/h3>\n

Yuma Wu<\/a> is a PhD student in law at the University of Ottawa with a background in computer science. Her research examines the social effects and regulation of AI companionship, with interests in human\u2013computer interaction, online harms and interdisciplinary collaboration. She holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a J.D. from the University of British Columbia, and an LL.M. in Technology Policy from Georgetown University.<\/span><\/p>\n

About the SRI Privacy Group<\/h2>\n

The SRI Privacy Group is an interdisciplinary community of students, faculty, and industry professionals<\/strong> representing fields including law, computer science, electrical engineering, policy, and the social sciences.<\/p>\n

We take a socio-technical approach to privacy<\/strong>, exploring the technical, legal, policy, and social dimensions of contemporary privacy issues.<\/p>\n

We meet monthly, generally on the third Friday, from 1 to 2 p.m. ET. Our October session takes place on Friday, October 23. Meeting format and access details are provided with each invitation.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n
