This session brought together technical, legal and social perspectives on AI governance, comparing Canada’s proposed Bill C-36 with the EU AI Act. Discussion examined the lapse of Bill C-27 and its proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act, and whether privacy law alone can address AI’s wider impacts. Watermarking of AI-generated content, including Claude’s approach, raised questions about robustness, output quality and the limits of detection. The session also explored explainability, security tradeoffs and responsibility across AI supply chains, connecting system design and regulation with people’s privacy, autonomy and ability to challenge decisions.
