Covid Alert, Privacy and Big Tech

As many residents of Canada probably have heard, the Canadian government launched a national Covid-19 exposure app, based on Google/Apple’s tracking system just under 2 weeks ago. Just yesterday, I was featured on TVO’s Agenda talking about the technical and privacy implications of Covid Alert. The way Covid Alert and similar apps have been developed also brings to light the interplay between tech titans like Google and Apple, and the role they play in global infrastructure that ends up being used for things like public health. We highlighted this interplay in this recently published Toronto Star Op-Ed, written together with Lisa Austin from the Faculty of Law and Wendy Wong from the Department of Political Science.
